Blessed McGill
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (November, 1997)
Average review score:

A wonderful tale of the western frontier.McGill is an inspiring hero, immensely capable, with a huge zest for life. He packs incredible adventures into his short life, yet tells his story in a delightfully laid back style. He combines an interest and tolerance of all ideas, religions and philosophies, with a violent intolerance of certain purveyors of them. McGill is a warrior/philosopher, born, raised and ideally suited to this harsh land. His story is one of violence, love, sin and redemption, but it is often hard to distinguish which is which.
This book is a "must read" for all lovers of powerfully written adventure stories, but may make all other westerns dull and unimaginative in comparison.
A rivetting tale that keeps you guessing. This is an incredible tale from beginning to end. Shrake has developed a character that is the first person born on the American Continent to achieve sainthood, and until the last pages of the book the reader is kept guessing how he could deserve such an honor. The book reads as a memoir written by McGill as he tells the story of his life while awaiting his death. He lives the life of an indian scalper, buffalo hunter, and gold miner in 19th century Texas from the time of the Texas War of Independence until after the US Civil War. The more you read of this man's account of his life, the less you can believe he could ever desert to be Sainted.
This book has long been out of print, and its re-printing is an excellent opportunity for new readers to discover a classic western. Any fan of Larry McMurty's books in the "Lonesome Dove" will love "Blessed McGill" and recognize that McMurty has probably gotten some of his writting style from reading this book.

Breads of the Southwest: Recipes in the Native American, Spanish, and Mexican Traditions
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (March, 1998)
Average review score:

Delicious results! This is an attractive book that provides interesting and useful information as well as delicious recipes that turn out successfully! It is fun to browse through the background information on southwest baking and ingredients. The recipes that I've tried include the Taos Pumpkin bread, Potato Bread with Southwest Herbs, Cornmeal Pueblo Bread with Walnuts, Blue Corn Bread and Blue Corn muffins. The instructions were easy to follow and everything turned out great! This is my favorite bread book right now.
Delicious Recipes!I am very pleased with this book as I have made the "Taos Pumpkin Bread" receipe and the "Pumpkin-Cinnamon Rolls". My family gobbled these breads down. Some of the recipes take time, but is well worth it. I am from the Southwest and truly do appreciate the recipes in this book. The photographs in this book are fabulous. The book includes a description or an "Horno" (a bee hive oven) something I grew up with on my Grandmother's property in Arroyo Hondo, New Mexico.

Published in Paperback by Northland Pub (March, 1900)

A Work of LoveThe author John A. Murray really wrote a work of love on movies and their southwest location (California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas). From such diverse films such as High Plains Drifter; Leaving Las Vegas; Sergeant Rutledge; Thelma & Louise; Jerimah Johnson; Easy Rider; and Tender Mercies. If you travel through parts of the Southwest (including the mystical ones) then your journey's will be a bit more enjoyable having been to the spot where Clark Cable, Montgomery Clift and Marylin Monroe created the Misfits! My trips have been more interesting! Cheers!

Contemporary Southwest: The Cafe Terra Cotta Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Ten Speed Press (March, 2001)
Average review score:

Southwestern Cuisine With StyleThis is an excellent collection of Southwestern recipes with stylistic touches. Especially appealing to me are those with fruit or dried fruit, such as Lamb Chops with Dried Cherry-Chipotle Sauce or Spinach Salad with Figs and Jicama or Tangy Cheese-Stuffed Quail with Mango-Chile Salsa. New discoveries of combo flavors are Muchroom, Jarlsberg and Parsley Salad and Corn Risitto. Also tantalizing is Dessert, Taquito or the Arizona Princess Cake, rich with apples, tequila, chocolate and pecans. Another well done TenSpeed Press output, with sources and nice, large format with super color photos and clear instructions and ingredients. Certainly, those who love Southwestern food will add this to their collection.
Recipes worth the effortCafe Terra Cotta is one of Tucson's local treasures. This book provides surprisingly easy directions for a selection of their classic wonderful dishes. The majority of the recipes call for ingredients that are relatively easily available, and the directions are easy to follow. I have had some comments by friends who glanced through the pages and decided that the recipes must be too complicated because of the numbers of different ingredients, but the two factors do not necessarily correlate. Yes, some recipes do call for a fairly lengthy list, but the actual procedures are quite simple, so there's no need to be intimidated. This is a really good little cookbook. I especially like the salsas, sauces, the garlic custard, and relishes. The tortilla soup is a favorite at pot-lucks. Try it!

Cooking Texas Style : Tenth Anniversary Edition
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (November, 1993)
Average review score:

Fabulous Classic Texas and Tex-Mex RecipesI absolutely love this book! Over the last ten years, it has become a staple in my kitchen and the kitchens of friends who I have blessed with a copy. I am not a very talented cook, but I find these recipes easy to follow and virtually fail proof. My husband, a fabulous cook, also loves cooking with recipes from Cooking Texas Style. The book is filled with great unheard of recipes as well as Texas and Tex-Mex classics. In addition to the recipes, the personal notes that Ms. Marquez and Ms. Wagner have included are a thrill to read. There is information about the origin of some of the dishes as well as great family stories. I highly recommend this book to the novice or master chef! Enjoy!
Excellent Regional CookbookThis cookbook is the best book on regional Texas cooking that I have ever read. The recipes are clear and informative, spanning Mexican, German, and Southern dishes. The work is made all the more interesting by its insights into Texan life and culture.
